Glassmaking is complex, time-taking and energy consuming. In fact, to produce high-quality glass items, a great deal of energy is used to melt the raw materials, maintain the molten glass at the correct temperature, and then to cool down the finishes items. And the industry is continuously looking for ways to reduce energy consumption – changing fuel, machinery and speed of production. Now it seems that there is a sure way of reducing energy consumption – presented in this article.

Glassmaking is an energy consuming process. There is no possibility of avoiding the melting of the batch and the glass at high temperature. However, this energy consuming working procedure alone has guided many of us to underestimate the huge potential of savings connected to melting. Each individual manufacturing and treatment process should be adjusted to minimum energy requirements.
Energy costs are increasing dramatically all around the world. In the 2004 - 2008 period, the prices for gas and for electricity more than doubled in Germany. These costs can hardly been compensated … normally.
But a short view into some details may change this idea. There is a huge potential in the glass industry to bring energy consumption down and efficiency up, as demonstrated by two important examples.

Fire polishing and press machine drives
Fire polishing of blown or pressed glassware is still carried out using burner rails instead of tracking burners. For a standard glassware line, this old fashioned method wastes as much energy and pollutes the environment as about 100 mid-sized cars!
The savings realized during tests using tracking burners were about 400,000 Nm³ oxygen and about 250,000 Nm³ gas per year, which is about EUR 150,000, and about 316 tonnes of CO2. Additionally, the achieved quality with tracking burners is much better, and higher production speed was also achieved. The yield is higher, because only the surface is treated which is resulting in less deformation.
