Thermal-shock machines testing the resistance of hollow glass to thermal changes

2011-03-01 | Containers

Few of us can imagine modern life without glass. It is in almost every aspect of our lives - in our homes, our cars and whenever we sit down to eat or drink. Glass packaging is used for many products: water, wines, spirits and beers all come in glass as do medicines and cosmetics, not to mention numerous food packages. In this article Vidromecanica discusses the equipment used in the container glass industry for quality control of articles from the production process (after annealing thermal treatment).

Thermal-shock machines testing the resistance of hollow glass to thermal changes
INTRODUCTION
Man has been making use of glass from the very beginning of his existence. Historians have discovered that a form of natural glass - obsidian - formed within the mouth of a volcano as a result of the intense heat of an eruption melting sand - was first used by man as spearheads. Today, glassmaking is a modern, hi-tech industry operating in a fiercely competitive global market where quality, design and service levels are critical to maintain market share.
Vidromecanica, a leading company in the glass industry, manufactures thermal equipment (for annealing, decorating and tempering); equipment for coating treatment (hot-end and cold-end coating) and cullet processing plants.
The development, design and manufacture of machinery, development of the control system, control panel construction and software provision for the production lines are managed by our own in-house specialists. Our technology results from our main technicians experience of decades and from our tight cooperation with many glass factories.

MODERN GLASSMAKING
Modern glass plants are able to make millions of glass containers a day in many different colours. When glass is made, it is heated to around 1,600°C, thus killing off any bacteria, while organic chemicals that might be present in the recycled glass are burned. This is why glass is used to pack products of premium quality – because no contamination from packaging occurs. Glass is elegant, and glass packaged products stand out. With many unique sh...
