Minerali Industriali: the lowest Fe2O3 content for higher quality glass production

2013-06-20 | Company news

Sasil S.p.A. has developed new sand types characterized by the lowest Fe2O3 content currently present in the European market. The used raw material is a high purity quartz coming from the mine of Sondalo (SO), after suitable treatments it is possible to reach a Fe2O3 concentration in the final product ranging from 20 to 80 ppm. These sands find application in the field of solar glass, flat glass for houses furnishing, special tableware and perfume bottles.

Sondalo quartz mine
The Sondalo quartz mine, owned by Minerali Industriali, is located above the village of Sondalo, in Upper Valtellina (Lombardy) and it is one of the biggest sources of quartz in Italy.
The quartz vein, of magmatic-hydrothermal origin, was put on place in a pre-Alpine stage and it has the shape of a lens located at the core of a large anticlinal lying fold with axis approximately oriented NW-SE.
The embedding lithologies belong to the Languard-Campo nappe (Australpine Domain) and they are mainly composed by greisen, gneiss, gabbros and amphibolites of Permian origin.
The quartz exploitation in this area was started many years ago in open pit, but at the end of the 80s, because of environmental and economic problems, the extraction activity was moved underground.
Nowadays the mine has a room and pillars structure, with heights of 40 metres, and total tunnels length of more than 6.5 kilometres spread over three exploitation levels; recent geological surveys have confirmed reserves for at least the next 30 years.
Chemically speaking, the Sondalo quartz is characterized by a natural high degree of purity with an average SiO2 content in rock ranging between 99.2 and 99.8 per cent.
The paragenesis is composed exclusively by quartz aggregates that show, in mass, colours ranging from milky white to pink or transparent.
