We are acid etching wine bottles for a customer, but are unfortunately getting a high spoilage rate due to "cat scratches" or "claw marks". These appear like a smooth claw marks down a nicely etched bottle. Does anyone no what causes this? I expect it has to do with the hardness of the surface at that point but am not sure.

I am an artist experimenting with waterglass (sodium silicate) as a way to protect earthen (adobe) walls from rain and weather. So far, so good. It seems to work very well. However, I would be very interested to know more about the product. Specifically, I'd like to know:

1. how much heat and pressure are required in the manufacturing of waterglass

2. how stabile and/or reactive is it with various organic compounds, particularly, of course, the kinds of clayey subsoils (most containing little organic matter, aside from straw) used for earthen building

3. assuming it doesn't degrade under UV, will I need to re-apply it to an earthen wall after, say, a winter's worth of rain?

4. How porous is it?

I've been applying it in a 50:50 water:waterglass solution. It doesn't appear to inhibit the "breathability" of the wall, since water seems to absorb and dry out readily.
Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to make coasters from 2 x 2 mm plate glass discs (80 mm diameter) with thin metal sandwiched in between.

I need to melt the glass enough to round the corners but not so much that it loses its shape.

What process do I use? ie. what temperature should the kiln be, how long should the glass be in for, should it go in when the kiln is cold and stay in as it is cooling down? currently have the problem that the glass cracks when I remove from the kiln when it has slumped sufficiently.

We are redoing one of galleries and one of the pieces they want to include is an infinity mirror set in the floor that people can walk on. The hole they've left for this is a 23 inch square with a one inch lip around it and about 3/8inches deep. Can anyone suggest what type of glass I would need to do this?
